How To Prepare Your Quilt

As soon as you have completed the quilt top, you are almost ready to send it to a professional quilter. There are a few details you need to consider.

  1. Quilt top: Ensure the top is square. Measure the width across the top, through the middle and across the bottom. Ideally these measurements will be the same. Also, measure the length on the left side, middle and right side. A small discrepancy can be dealt with.
  2. Backing: Try to have the backing fabric match the colour of the thread that you will choose for the quilting. I prefer to use the same colour of thread in bobbin as on the top. A small print fabric works well. The backing must be 4 inches larger on all sides. For example, if the quilt top is 50" x 70" the backing will be 58" x 78". Please press any seams open.
  3. Batting: There are a multitude of battings on the market and most quilt beautifully on a long arm machine. The batting must be 3 inches larger on all sides .  For example, if the quilt top is 50" x 70" the batting will be 56" x 76".

Check List:

Quilt top is squared.

Backing is 4" larger on all sides of quilt.

Backing and top of are equal color value. (i.e., dark top needs dark back, light top needs light backing )
